Alert: Potential Power Outages

In the coming days, parts of our district may expect Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) and other measures to protect against the anticipated high Santa Ana winds and the wildfire risk they carry, especially in our rural communities.

High fire risk conditions could impact the electric infrastructure serving local communities, so our utility companies may employ the PSPS strategy to keep the risk of wildfires at bay.

Staying informed is essential, especially during extreme weather events. Checking official electricity/utility provider websites is the best way for you to keep updated on potential emergency shutoffs and important safety information.

In the 32nd District, we are fortunate to have dedicated emergency service personnel who respond to the scene of wildfires and other emergencies quickly and efficiently. However, each of us needs to take time to prepare ourselves and our household for the possibility of wildfires.

Here are some things to consider:

  • Do you have a plan in case of a power outage?
    • A generator, flashlights and batteries, and ice packs to keep perishables safe are some of the things you might need.

  • Do you know what route to take in an emergency evacuation?
    • Consider alternate routes in case your primary route is blocked?

  • Do you have copies of important documents ready to be grabbed?
    • This can include legal records, identification and birth certificates, and insurance paperwork.

  • Where can your pets go in case of evacuation?
    • Most emergency evacuation shelters do not accept domestic animals.

  • How will you communicate with your family in an emergency situation?
    • Do you have an out-of-area contact that everyone in your family knows to check in with in case of impacted phone/internet access?

In addition to the planning steps above, avoid using power equipment, check to ensure you have at least 100 feet of defensible space around your home, and if you see a downed power line, keep a safe distance and call 911 immediately.
