Bond Transparency Legislation Rejected in Committee

This week, I presented SB 986 to the Elections and Constitutional Amendments Committee. This bill would have required ballot labels for any proposed bond measures to include an estimate of the amount of interest that will be due on the bond.

Unfortunately, the bill did not move forward due to the abstentions of all of the supermajority members of the committee.

Adding this financial disclosure to ballot labels would arm voters with the necessary information they need to decide whether we can borrow money on their behalf.

Californians deserve clear and concise information from their governing bodies, especially when making decisions on how to spend their tax dollars.

Transparency is the way we win back voters’ trust, which has deteriorated rapidly in recent years because of broken promises and reckless spending.

I asked that SB 986 be taken up for reconsideration at a future date, and I will keep you informed of the results.
