Hire a Veteran Day

This year, I was proud to introduce SCR-132 to officially recognize today, July 25th, as Hire a Veteran Day in California. This day serves as a call to action for employers to recognize and utilize the unique skills and experiences Veterans bring to the workforce.

Every year, approximately 200,000 service members transition from military to civilian life and often face significant challenges in finding and competing for jobs. In California, home to nearly 2 million Veterans, we experience higher unemployment rates among Veterans and house a substantial portion of the nation’s homeless Veteran population.

Veterans possess core values such as loyalty, integrity, and a strong work ethic. Many are technical experts with leadership and team experience, making them invaluable assets to any workplace. In 2021, nearly 38% of California’s Veterans held a bachelor’s degree or higher, contributing significantly to our professional and trade sectors.

That is why I am also proud to author SB 73, which allows private businesses to establish voluntary hiring preferences for Veteran applicants. This bill has passed through the State Senate with bipartisan support and is now in the Assembly.

Let us honor those who have served our nation by creating more opportunities for them in our workforce. Together, we can make a meaningful impact in the lives of our Veterans.

It is my honor to serve you in our 32nd District, home to one of California’s largest Veterans populations.

Thank you.
