Purple Heart Day

Today is Purple Heart Day.

The Purple Heart is awarded to members of the Armed Forces who were wounded or killed by enemy actions while serving our country.

It is a medal given not for achievement but in honor of sacrifice, and denotes one of the highest respects we as a country bestow on our heroes.

To this day, almost 2 million Purple Heart Medals have been awarded, many posthumously.

It was my honor to introduce SCR 28 to declare August 7th, 2023, as Purple Heart Day in California to honor the many service members and Veterans in our communities who have been bestowed with this solemn distinction.

As the state with the highest population of military Veterans, it is important that we continue to honor the legacy of those who put country above self.

Today, please take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices of the men and women who have been awarded the Purple Heart while serving and fighting to defend our freedoms.
