Sacramento, CA – Senator Kelly Seyarto (R-Murrieta) is proud to announce that SB 255, giving property owners notice of deed changes, has been signed into law.
SB 255 creates a record notification program where counties notify parties involved in a transfer of ownership of a property. This protects homeowners and buyers from fraud, which has become easier to carry out with the use of electronic signatures.
Currently, 6 of California’s 58 counties offer property owners free notifications when a change in ownership documents is recorded. This bill expands those programs so all Californians have access to it.
“Property ownership is one of the most important investments a Californian can make,” said Senator Seyarto. “With title fraud becoming easier to commit in the digital age, SB 255 ensures that homeowners are promptly notified of changes to their property records. This law is a commonsense way to protect families from costly mistakes and criminal fraud.”
SB 255 received bipartisan support with no opposition in the Senate and Assembly.
