Stay Safe and Prepare for an Earthquake

As you know, earlier this morning, an earthquake and its aftershocks rattled our district.

We are all aware of our state’s vulnerabilities to earthquakes, and being prepared for it can make a huge difference in the effort to save lives and property.

We’re fortunate to have emergency service professionals who work tirelessly to keep us informed and ready. But preparedness starts with each of us. Taking a few simple steps now can help you and your loved ones stay safe and recover more quickly after an emergency.

Earthquakes can happen anywhere at any time. You may only have seconds to protect yourself before strong shaking knocks you down or something falls on you. Being prepared will help you survive, help others, and recover quickly.

I urge you to prepare to respond to an emergency now. Have a plan and save time during an event.

Here are some things to help you prepare:

  • Identify safe spots at home, work, and school
  • Build an emergency kit with food, water,  and first aid
  • Learn your area’s risks and evacuation routes
  • Develop an emergency communication plan with your family and friends
  • Download the MyShakeApp to get early alerts
  • When shaking starts, Drop, Cover, and Hold On

The MyShake app can notify you on your phone before an earthquake of a 4.5 magnitude or higher happens. This is the first system of its kind in the nation.

Visit California Office of Emergency Services’ Earthquake Warning website for more information.

If you feel shaking or get an earthquake alert, immediately “Drop, Cover, and Hold On.”
