Suicide Prevention Week

A person commits suicide every 11 minutes in the United States.

Suicide is in the top four leading causes of death for children and adults from 10-44 years old, with suicide being nearly twice as common as homicide.

The issue is also prevalent among Veterans, with an average of 17 Veterans committing suicide every day.

I am proud to have authored SCR 61 to declare September 4-10, 2023 California Suicide Prevention Week in an effort to raise awareness on this public health issue.

Every time a person commits suicide, we are robbed of their potential to be a part of our community. Over 5 million people in the United States have been impacted by losing a loved one to suicide.

We must do everything in our power to support and uplift those experiencing mental health hardships and help them access the help they need because suicides are largely preventable when people are able to get help.

The Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Hotline is available nationwide.

Calling or texting 988 will connect you directly with a trained, compassionate counselor who will listen, provide support, and connect you to the appropriate resources. This service is free, confidential, and available 24 hours/7 days a week.
