I am proud to introduce my 2026 Veteran and Military Family bill package, advancing practical, commonsense solutions that honor service and support military families.
SB 888 removes a Veteran’s disability compensation from the income calculation used to determine eligibility for the Low-Income Exclusion of the Disabled Veterans’ Property Tax Exemption, allowing households that rely on Social Security and disability compensation to qualify for the exclusion.
Disabled Veterans deserve a system that recognizes the benefits they earned and supports their ability to stay in their homes. This exemption should work for Veterans who are reliant on disability compensation to make ends meet.
SB 893 will allow Gold Star Family members to receive free day-use access to all California State Parks. While federal law provides Gold Star families free access to national parks, California does not currently offer a comparable statewide benefit.
This is a small but meaningful way to honor families who have paid an unimaginable price. This bill aligns California policy with federal standards and recognizes the unique sacrifice made by Gold Star families who have lost a loved one.
I am also proud to be a co-author of SCA 4 and SB 623 (Archuleta), which would allow eligible Veterans and disabled Veterans to receive both the homeowners’ property tax exemption and the Veterans’ or Disabled Veterans’ exemption on their primary residence, if approved by voters. Current law limits property owners to a single exemption, which has resulted in little use of the Veterans’ exemption. This measure would update the law to allow eligible Veterans to access both exemptions.
In addition to these bills, I will also introduce a resolution to recognize August 7, 2026, as Purple Heart Day in California, honoring the service members and Veterans who were wounded or killed by enemy action in service to our country.
I am proud to serve California’s 32nd District, home to one of California’s largest Veteran populations. Thank you.
